Mrs. Christine Truckenmiller received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Rockford College and M.S. in Reading Education from Northern Illinois University. She joined Immanuel in 1988 and has been teaching second grade since 1991. She has one son currently attending Dakota High School.


Second Grade Curriculum Highlights:

Religion

  • Activities, crafts, and Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments
  • Memorization of key verses related to the Bible stories

Reading

  • Quality literature to increase knowledge, understanding and appreciation of ourselves and others
  • Systematic instruction to develop a variety of strategies and skills needed to construct meaning, develop vocabulary and apply phonetic rules
  • Integration of the language arts of listening, speaking, reading and writing

Phonics

  • Systematic and explicit instruction including long and short vowels, r-controlled vowels and variant vowels, consonant blends and digraphs

Spelling

  • Weekly tests of high-frequency words and words that have similar spelling patterns

English

  • Writing sentences, paragraphs, stories, letters and book reports using correct grammar, mechanics and word usage

Handwriting

  • Zaner-Bloser – manuscript and cursive with focus on size, shape, slant and spacing

Math

  • Addition and subtraction up to three digits requiring regrouping
  • Basic measurement, time, money, geometry and fractions

Social Studies

  • Citizenship
  • Bridging life today and life long ago
  • Geography
  • Economic ideas related to student’s needs and wants
